The coast road north of Kozhikode: Kappad, Vadakara and Payyoli
The coast road from Kappad through Vadakara to Payyoli: beaches, a lighthouse, a memorial and the ordinary towns between them.

The road north from Kozhikode runs close to the sea for most of an hour, through towns that make their living from fishing, coconut and the traffic on the highway. It is not a scenic drive in the postcard sense. It is a working coast, and that is the interest.
Treat it as a half day with three or four stops rather than a route to complete. The distances are short, the road is slow, and the heat decides how long you spend out of the car.
Kappad
Kappad is the first stop and the best known, because of the 1498 landing and the memorial on the headland. The beach is broad and open, with rocks at the southern end and a shallow shelf that makes it popular with families.
It is also the most visited beach in the district after the city's own, so go early. By mid-morning the sand is hot, the stalls are busy and the light is hard.
Vadakara and the memorial
Vadakara is a market town at the mouth of a river, with a fishing harbour and a history that runs deeper than its size suggests. The Kunjali Marakkar memorial nearby commemorates the zamorin's admirals, who fought the Portuguese at sea in the sixteenth century.
The town itself is worth an hour: the fish market in the morning, the bridge over the river, and the tea shops around the bus stand. There is a small lighthouse on the rocky stretch of coast nearby, which is a good place to watch the sea rather than swim in it.
Payyoli and the northern stretch
Payyoli is a beach town with a long, clean shore and very little built on it. It is the kind of place where the main activity is walking, eating fish and watching the boats come in, and where the absence of a promenade is the point.
The coast between Vadakara and Payyoli is where the district's beaches are at their least developed. Access is by short lanes off the highway, parking is informal, and there are no facilities to speak of — which means going prepared rather than hoping.
Driving it, and the season
Buses run the highway all day and are the cheapest way to do the route, but they stop in town centres rather than at the beaches, so the last kilometre is an auto ride. A car or a scooter gives you the freedom to stop where the coast looks good.
November to February is the comfortable window. The monsoon makes the sea dangerous and the road wet, and the summer is punishing on open sand. Whatever the month, this is a coastline where people fish and children play at the edge — it is not a swimming coast in the organised sense.
The district in brief
Calicut was the port that drew Arab, Chinese and Portuguese traders for pepper. The old town still has a spice-and-food culture to match, while the coast north and the green ridges inland offer beaches, waterfalls and quiet roads.
