Seasons
Kerala's seasons, explained without the brochure
What December, April and July actually feel like — and what each season is good for.

Kerala does not have four seasons. It has a hot dry season, a long southwest monsoon, a short northeast monsoon and a humid window in between. Tourist brochures flatten this into 'best time: October to March'. That is true for beaches. It is not the whole story.
December to February: the easy months
This is the most comfortable window: lower humidity, cooler nights in the hills, calm seas on the coast and the best conditions for trekking and wildlife. It is also the most expensive and the most crowded, especially between Christmas and New Year. Book houseboats and hill hotels well ahead. Munnar can be genuinely cold at night; the coast remains warm.
March to May: heat and harvest
Temperatures climb, humidity rises and the coast becomes sticky. The hills are still pleasant, and the temple festival season is in full swing: Thrissur Pooram usually falls in April or May. If you can handle the heat, this is a good time for culture, food and hill stations, with fewer international visitors. The sea is calm but the sun is fierce.
June to September: the southwest monsoon
Rain arrives from the sea in dramatic, sustained bursts. The landscape turns intensely green, waterfalls are at their most powerful and prices drop. Many beach businesses close, swimming is unsafe, and trekking can be closed. Ayurveda resorts remain open and often offer monsoon packages. Travel is possible, but build in delays and check road conditions, especially in Idukki and Wayanad.
October and November: the northeast monsoon
The main southwest monsoon withdraws, but the northeast monsoon brings short, intense evening thunderstorms, mostly in the south. Days are often bright, the land is still green and the tourist season is beginning. This is one of the most underrated windows for travel, provided you keep afternoons flexible.
For a first trip, December to February is the safest bet. For photographers and walkers, October and November are lovely. For a slower, cheaper, more atmospheric trip, the monsoon is worth considering — but only if you plan around it.
