The guide
Why Kappad Beach?
Kappad is a small beach about 15 km north of Kozhikode, marked by a stone monument commemorating Vasco da Gama's landing in 1498. The beach itself is wide and relatively quiet, backed by coconut palms and a fishing village, with rock outcrops at the southern end. It is not a resort beach; facilities are basic and the sea can be rough.
Its interest is historical and atmospheric rather than scenic in the resort sense. The Portuguese landing opened a period of European trade and conflict on the Malabar coast, and Kappad remains a modest place with a strong sense of the old sea route. Combine it with Kozhikode's food scene and the Beypore shipyard, where wooden dhows are still built by hand.
Why go
A quiet Malabar beach with a significant place in maritime history, close to Kozhikode's food and craft culture.
What makes it different
