The guide

Why Thekkady?

Thekkady is the town beside Periyar Tiger Reserve, one of India's best-known wildlife areas. The centrepiece is the artificial Periyar lake, where boat safaris offer a chance to see elephants, gaur, sambar and birds along the shoreline. The reserve also runs guided walks, bamboo rafting and border hikes, all with forest department guides and permits.

The town itself is a strip of spice shops, hotels and Ayurveda centres, and it can feel busy. The wildlife experience is real but managed: sightings are not guaranteed, boats are regulated and the forest is not a zoo. Spice garden visits are worthwhile when the guide is knowledgeable and the garden is working rather than a staged photo stop. Thekkady is also a good base for Gavi and the northern edge of the Cardamom Hills.

Why go

Who it suits

Families, senior travellers and access

With children

Yes for boat safaris and gentle walks. Bamboo rafting and longer hikes need older children.

Senior travellers

Moderate. Boats involve steps and uneven boarding; forest walks can be tiring in the heat.

Accessibility

Limited. Forest trails and boats are not designed for wheelchair users; ask the forest office about alternatives.

Practical

Safety and weather

Read before you go

Stay with guides, keep distance from wildlife and never feed animals. Leeches are common in the wet season. The ghat roads are accident-prone at night.

Medical

Thekkady and Kumily have clinics; serious cases go to Kottayam or Madurai.

Police

Kumily police station serves the area.

Cooler than the coast, 15–28°C, with heavy monsoon rain and mist.

Questions

Practical answers

Will I see a tiger?

Very unlikely. Periyar is a large forest and tigers are shy. Elephants, gaur and birds are more realistic sightings.

Should I book the boat safari in advance?

Yes in peak season. Tickets are limited and often sell out, especially for early mornings.
