The guide

Why Gavi?

Gavi is a small forest settlement inside the Periyar ecosystem, reached from Vandiperiyar through tea estates and dense forest. The Kerala Forest Department runs eco-tourism here with guided programmes that typically include a boat ride, short nature walks, a viewpoint and basic tented or dormitory accommodation. The limited number of visitors is the point: this is not a safari park.

The forest is real, with elephants, gaur and leopards present, though sightings are never guaranteed. The experience is about birds, butterflies, silence and the scale of the canopy. Permits and packages must be booked through the official eco-tourism system, and the road can be closed by landslides or weather. Come prepared for basic facilities, no reliable mobile signal and a strict leave-no-trace approach.

Why go

A rare chance to stay inside a protected Western Ghats forest with an official guide, away from the tour-bus circuit.

What makes it different

The combination of a remote forest camp, restricted access and Periyar's biodiversity makes Gavi one of Kerala's most rewarding eco-stays.

Logistics

How to get there

By air

Kochi airport is about 170 km away; Madurai in Tamil Nadu is another option depending on the route.

By rail

The nearest practical railheads are Kottayam and Kumily; onward travel is by road.

By road

Access is via Vandiperiyar, then a forest road. Private vehicles may be restricted; confirm the meeting point with the operator.

Nearest airport

Cochin International Airport (COK), ~170 km

Nearest railway

Kottayam (KTYM), ~110 km

Transport is usually part of the forest package. Do not expect taxis or ride-hailing inside the forest area.

Permits & access

A forest permit is required. Book only through official eco-tourism channels and carry identification; do not enter the forest independently.

Who it suits

Families, senior travellers and access

With children

Better for older children who can follow guide instructions and stay quiet. Not suitable for toddlers.

Senior travellers

Moderate. Walks are short but on uneven forest ground; basic facilities and long road transfers are tiring.

Accessibility

Very limited. Forest trails, steps and basic camp facilities are not wheelchair accessible.

Practical

Safety and weather

Read before you go

Stay with the guide at all times; elephants and gaur are dangerous. Do not walk at night or leave food out. Carry any essential medication, as the nearest hospital is far away.

Medical

First aid is basic; the nearest hospitals are in Kumily or Kottayam.

Police

The forest range office and local police can be contacted through the guide.

Cool, wet and misty for much of the year, with heavy monsoon rain. Nights can be cold.

Questions

Can I drive to Gavi in my own car?
