The guide

Why Thattekad Bird Sanctuary?

Thattekad, also called Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, protects a patch of lowland forest along the Periyar river about 60 km east of Kochi. It is one of the richest bird areas in Kerala, with species such as the Malabar grey hornbill, Sri Lanka frogmouth, white-bellied treepie and many endemics of the Western Ghats.

The sanctuary is small and the birding is best at dawn and dusk with a knowledgeable local guide. There are forest trails and a few watchtowers, but no guarantee of dramatic sightings. The surrounding area has homestays and small resorts geared to birders. This is a place for patience, binoculars and quiet, not a family safari park.

Why go

One of South India's best lowland birding sites, within easy reach of Kochi and the airport.

What makes it different

The riverine forest supports a dense mix of Western Ghats endemics and migratory species in a compact area.

Questions

Practical answers

Do I need a guide at Thattekad?

It is strongly recommended. Local guides know the calls, territories and trails, and access rules are easier to navigate with them.

Can I see hornbills?

Possibly. The sanctuary is known for Malabar grey hornbills and other species, but wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.
