The guide

Why Fort Kochi?

Fort Kochi is the historic core of Kochi, shaped in layers by Portuguese, Dutch and British rule and by centuries of trade with Arab, Chinese and Jewish communities. The waterfront is famous for its cantilevered Chinese fishing nets, still operated by hand, and the lanes behind it hold a remarkable concentration of churches, warehouses, art spaces and restored townhouses.

It is the most walkable and most cosmopolitan place in Kerala, and a good first base for travellers arriving at Kochi airport. The area is compact enough to explore on foot or by bicycle, with Mattancherry's spice market and the Paradesi Synagogue a short ride away. It is also touristy, with rising prices and a lot of cafes; the quieter lanes and the early morning waterfront are where the place still feels like itself.
