The guide
Why Cherai Beach?
Cherai is a beach on Vypin island, north of Kochi, with a long stretch of sand and a unusual geography: the sea on one side and the backwaters on the other, separated by a narrow strip of land. It is popular with day-trippers from Kochi and has a growing strip of resorts and homestays.
The southern end is busier and has the most facilities; walking north brings quieter sand and fishing villages. Swimming is not reliably safe due to currents, and the beach can be littered after busy weekends. Cherai works well as a relaxed base close to the airport, especially for a first or last night, and can be combined with Fort Kochi and the Vypin backwaters.
Why go
A convenient beach close to Kochi, with backwater scenery and a less polished, more local atmosphere than resort beaches further south.
What makes it different
The narrow Vypin strip puts the sea and the backwaters within a few minutes' walk of each other.
Logistics
