The guide

Why Palakkad Fort?

Palakkad Fort, also called Tipu's Fort, is a granite fort in the centre of Palakkad town, built in the 18th century and later used by the British. The structure is modest by Indian fort standards but well preserved, with a moat, thick walls, a small museum and a garden. It is a pleasant, low-key stop rather than a major monument.

Its real interest is the setting: Palakkad sits at the 30-kilometre-wide gap in the Western Ghats, the historic pass between Kerala and Tamil Nadu. That geography explains the district's drier climate, its Tamil influence and its role in trade and invasion. The fort is a good half-hour stop on the way to Malampuzha or Silent Valley, and the surrounding town has some of Kerala's best Tamil-influenced food.

What makes it different
