The guide
Why Thrissur?
Thrissur is a city built around ritual and performance. The Vadakkunnathan temple sits on a hill in the centre, surrounded by a maidan that fills each year for Thrissur Pooram, one of Kerala's largest and most spectacular festivals, with caparisoned elephants, drum ensembles and fireworks. The city is also home to the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi and a strong theatre and music scene.
Outside festival time, Thrissur is a manageable city with a famous round, a lively market and some of the best vegetarian food in the state. The archaeological museum and the Shakthan Thampuran palace add context. It is not a resort town, but it is one of the most culturally alive places in Kerala and a good base for Athirappilly and Guruvayur.
