The guide
Why Guruvayur?
Guruvayur is home to the Sree Krishna temple, one of the most important Vaishnava shrines in Kerala and a place of intense daily worship. The temple's central shrine is believed to be centuries old, and the surrounding town exists largely to serve pilgrims, with lodges, vegetarian restaurants and shops selling offerings.
This is a pilgrimage destination, not a heritage attraction. Dress codes are strict, photography is restricted, and the queues can be long. Visitors of other faiths should check current entry rules before travelling. The town is also known for its elephant sanctuary at Punnathur Kotta, where temple elephants are cared for, and for the annual Guruvayur Ekadasi festival. Approach with respect and avoid treating the temple as a photo opportunity.
