The guide
Why Ranipuram Hills?
Ranipuram, also called Madathumala, is a hill area in the northern Western Ghats near the Karnataka border. The landscape is open grassland interspersed with shola forest, at around 750–1,000 metres, and the trek to the ridge is short enough for a half-day but steep enough to feel earned. On clear days the view extends across the Ghats.
This is a quiet, less-developed alternative to Wayanad or Munnar. Facilities are basic, and the weather can change quickly. The area is part of an elephant corridor, so walking without a guide is not advisable. Ranipuram pairs well with Bekal Fort and Kasaragod's backwaters for a far-north itinerary.
Why go
A quiet grassland trek with big views, far from Kerala's main tourist circuit.
What makes it different
The shola-grassland ecosystem and border setting give Ranipuram a wilder, less manicured feel than the state's resort hills.
