The guide

Why Bekal Fort?

Bekal Fort is the largest fort in Kerala, a sweep of laterite ramparts above the Arabian Sea in Kasaragod district. The fort was built by the Ikkeri Nayakas and later held by Tipu Sultan and the British; its keyhole-shaped observation tower and long sea wall are distinctive. The scale is impressive, and the walk along the ramparts gives views over the beach and the palm-covered coast.

The fort is well maintained and popular, especially at sunset. A beach below the fort is reachable by a path, and the nearby Bekal Residency and Anjaneya temple add context. It is a good base for exploring the far north, including Ranipuram and the backwaters around Kasaragod. Go early or late to avoid heat and tour groups.

Why go

Kerala's most dramatic coastal fort, with a long seawall, laterite architecture and a beach below.

What makes it different

The sheer scale of the ramparts and their position directly above the sea make Bekal unlike Kerala's smaller coastal forts.
