The guide
Why Ponmudi?
Ponmudi sits at around 900–1,100 metres in the Western Ghats east of Thiruvananthapuram. The road up is the attraction as much as the destination: a sequence of tight hairpins through rubber, then tea, then cloud forest, with viewpoints appearing between the trees. The settlement itself is small — a handful of tea stalls and government accommodation — which keeps the place refreshingly undeveloped.
This is a day trip or an overnight for people who want cool air and quiet rather than a resort scene. The nearby Golden Valley and Meenmutty Falls add short walks, and the drive can be combined with the Neyyar reservoir. Monsoon rain brings leeches and slippery trails; the road can be affected by landslips, so check conditions locally in the wet season.
Why go
The closest genuine hill country to Thiruvananthapuram, with a spectacular ghat road and far fewer visitors than Munnar.
What makes it different
A high, forested ridge within easy reach of the coast, with a tea estate and a road that is an experience in itself.
Logistics
How to get there
By air
Trivandrum International Airport is about 65 km away, roughly 2 hours by car.
By rail
Thiruvananthapuram Central is about 60 km away; taxis or a hired car are the practical option.
By road
Drive via Kallar; the final stretch is narrow with sharp hairpins. Local buses run but are infrequent and slow.
Nearest airport
Trivandrum International Airport (TRV), ~65 km
Nearest railway
Thiruvananthapuram Central (TVC), ~60 km
A hired car with a driver is the sensible choice. Local buses connect the town but do not give you flexibility on the ghat road.

With children
Yes for children who tolerate winding roads. Carry motion-sickness precautions and warm layers.
Senior travellers
Moderate. The drive is long and twisty; the top is cool and walkable, but facilities are basic.
Accessibility
Poor. Expect steps, uneven paths and no dedicated accessible facilities.
Practical
Safety and weather
Read before you go
The ghat road is narrow with blind bends. Use an experienced driver, avoid night driving and check for landslip warnings during the monsoon. Leeches are common on forest walks in the wet season.
Medical
Basic facilities are limited; the nearest full hospitals are in Thiruvananthapuram.
Police
Contact the local police station in Vithura or Thiruvananthapuram.
Noticeably cooler than the coast, often misty, with heavy monsoon rain. Temperatures can fall to the mid-teens in winter nights.
