The guide
Why Kolukkumalai?
Kolukkumalai is a tea estate on a ridge above Munnar, often described as the world's highest tea plantation. The final approach is a steep, unpaved jeep track from Suryanelli, and the reward is a view over layered ridges, with the plains of Tamil Nadu falling away to the east. The estate's small orthodox tea factory still processes leaf in the traditional way.
This is a sunrise trip, not a leisurely day out. Jeeps typically leave Munnar well before dawn, and the track is rough, dusty and sometimes impassable after heavy rain. There are no proper facilities at the top beyond basic tea stalls. Go with a local driver, dress warmly, and be prepared for cloud rather than a guaranteed view. The experience is worth it for the landscape and the tea, not for a checklist photo.
Why go
One of Kerala's great sunrise viewpoints, with a working high-altitude tea estate and a genuinely adventurous approach.
What makes it different
The combination of altitude, orthodox tea production and a rough jeep track keeps it wilder than Munnar's main viewpoints.
Logistics
How to get there
By air
Cochin International Airport is about 130 km away.
By rail
Aluva or Ernakulam are the main railheads, followed by a long road transfer.
By road
Drive to Suryanelli, then transfer to a local jeep for the final forest track.
Nearest airport
Cochin International Airport (COK), ~130 km
Nearest railway
Aluva (AWY), ~130 km
Local jeeps are the only practical way up the final track. Do not attempt it in a standard car.

Money
What it costs, and what we assume
Per person, per day
₹2,000–₹4,500
Indicative, not a quotation.
Per person per day, excluding travel to Kerala. Assumes a shared jeep, tea and breakfast in Munnar; a private jeep costs more.
- · Excludes travel to Kerala and any international flights.
- · Assumes two people sharing; solo travellers usually pay more per person.
- · Peak season, festivals and luxury stays can multiply the upper figure.
Who it suits
Families, senior travellers and access
With children
Better for older children. The track is very bumpy and there are drop-offs.
Senior travellers
Not ideal. The jeep ride is rough and the altitude can be tiring; consider a gentler Munnar viewpoint instead.
Accessibility
Not accessible. Rough terrain, open jeeps and uneven ground at the top.
Practical
Safety and weather
Read before you go
Use an experienced local driver and a vehicle in good condition. The track is narrow with steep drops and can be impassable in rain. Carry warm clothing and water; there is no medical facility nearby.
Medical
Nearest hospitals are in Munnar, at least an hour away by jeep and road.
Police
Munnar police station covers the area.
Cold and windy at dawn, often cloudy. Temperatures can be close to 5–10°C in winter; rain makes the track unsafe.
Questions
Practical answers
Can I drive to Kolukkumalai myself?
The final track is not suitable for ordinary cars. Park at Suryanelli and take a local jeep.
Is sunrise guaranteed?
No. Cloud and mist are common. Go for the landscape and the tea estate, not only the photo.
