The guide
Why Ashtamudi Lake?
Ashtamudi means 'eight confluences', and the lake's branching shape makes it one of the most varied stretches of the Kerala backwaters. Kollam's waterfront is a working port of cashew warehouses and fishing boats, while a short boat ride away the canals narrow into coconut-lined villages and islands such as Munroe Island.
Compared with Alappuzha, the houseboat scene here is smaller and the town feels less staged. That makes it a good choice if you want the backwaters without the convoy of boats. Kayaking and village walks are excellent, and the lake is also the gateway to Thenmala and the Jatayu sculpture inland. Overnight houseboats usually include meals; confirm safety equipment and the route before booking.
Why go
A quieter, more local backwater experience within easy reach of Kollam's railway station and the southern circuit.
What makes it different
The lake's eight arms create a network of channels, islands and fishing villages that feels more lived-in than a single canal loop.
