Jatayu Earth's Center: the sculpture, the walk and the view
A giant bird on a rock in Kollam district is part monument, part park and part viewpoint. What to expect from the walk, the cable car and the story behind it.

The first thing to understand about Jatayu Earth's Center is that it is not an ancient monument. It is a contemporary sculpture park built around a very old story. The giant bird on the rock at Chadayamangalam, in Kollam district, represents Jatayu from the Ramayana: the vulture king who tried to stop Ravana carrying Sita away, and who fell here after the fight.
The sculpture is the reason people come. It sits on top of a rocky hill, and from a distance the bird appears to be resting on the stone rather than placed on a plinth. Up close, the scale is the attraction: the head, beak and folded wings are large enough to walk beneath, and the site has been designed so that the approach reveals it slowly.
Getting up the rock
There are two ways up: a cable car and a walking route. The cable car is the easier option and gives a clean view back over the plain, but it can be affected by wind, maintenance or crowds. The walk is more direct and more exposed, with steps and uneven rock in places. Neither is a wilderness hike, but the heat is real and there is little shade on the upper sections.
- Start early. The rock heats up and the light is better before midday.
- Carry water; the climb is short but the humidity is not.
- Wear shoes with grip rather than flip-flops.
- Check whether the cable car is running before you pay for a ticket that depends on it.
What else is there
The wider park includes landscaped areas, viewpoints and adventure activities such as zip lines and climbing walls, depending on what is operating. It is a family-oriented attraction rather than a contemplative heritage site, and the facilities are priced accordingly. If you are looking for a quiet historical site, this is not it; if you are travelling with children or want a viewpoint with a story, it works.
The setting is the most underrated part. Chadayamangalam sits on the road between Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram, and the hill gives a wide view of the midland: rubber, coconut, small towns and the distant ridge of the Western Ghats. The landscape explains why the story placed the fall here, at a crossing point between the coast and the hills.
The story, briefly
In the Ramayana, Jatayu sees Ravana abducting Sita and attacks the chariot. He is mortally wounded and falls. Rama later finds him, hears his account and performs his last rites. The site's name and the sculpture's pose refer to that moment. It is a story about witness and loyalty, and the park presents it plainly rather than as a theme-park narrative.
