The guide
Why Marari Beach?
Marari is a village beach about 12 km north of Alappuzha, named after Mararikulam. The sand is wide, the palms come right to the edge and the pace is set by fishing boats rather than beach bars. It is a good place to combine a backwater trip with two nights of doing very little.
The village has a growing number of homestays and small resorts, but it remains low-key. Swimming is not reliably safe because of currents and a steep shelf; treat it as a place for long walks, sunsets and seafood rather than a swimming holiday. It also makes a gentle base for visiting Alappuzha's canals without sleeping in the busiest part of town.
Why go
A calm, village-scale beach with good homestays and easy access to the Alappuzha backwaters.
What makes it different
A working fishing beach with a low-rise, locally owned hospitality scene rather than a resort strip.
